Kargil Ki Kahani: This is the story of the battle fought at Point 4875 in Mashkoh Valley, where Indian soldiers wrote a new chapter of their bravery and sacrifice. Point 4875, located at an altitude of 15,990 feet above sea level, which was known as ‘Pimple Two’, was very important from a strategic point of view. Pakistani soldiers who had infiltrated in the guise of terrorists had occupied this peak. The task of recapturing it was given to the 17th Jat Regiment. On 6 July 1999, Charlie Company of 17 Jat Regiment under the leadership of Major Ritesh Sharma started to accomplish this difficult mission. On 7 July, a face-to-face battle had started between the brave soldiers of the Indian Army and the enemy.
During the war, Major Ritesh Sharma was seriously injured and was sent back to the base for treatment. Now Captain Anuj Nayyar was given the command of Charlie Company in his place. After getting information from a shepherd, the Indian army started its exercise in Kargil. This exercise soon turned into an encounter and then into a war which was impossible to win. But how did the Indian army make the impossible possible, read further…
Captain Anuj’s courage proved to be stronger than the enemy’s bullets.
Captain Anuj made a new strategy and divided the assault team into two parts. Captain Vikram Batra led the first team, while he kept the command of the second team with himself. A reconnaissance team was sent to assess the enemy’s situation, which informed about the presence of four enemy bunkers. Based on this information, Captain Anuj along with his team attacked the enemy.
As soon as the Indian soldiers advanced, the enemy started mortar and artillery fire from the bunkers. But Captain Anuj’s team did not lose courage. They moved forward rapidly responding to the enemy’s fire. Captain Anuj attacked the first bunker with a rocket launcher and grenade and destroyed it. After this, one by one he destroyed three other enemy bunkers and moved forward towards the fourth one.
The enemy, seeing the zeal of the Indian soldiers, panicked and started firing indiscriminately from automatic heavy machine guns. But Captain Anuj continued to attack without caring for his life. Meanwhile, the enemy fired a grenade at him from a rocket
launcher, due to which he was seriously injured. Captain Anuj made the supreme sacrifice of his life for the country on the battlefield itself. In this battle, Captain Anuj single-handedly killed nine enemy soldiers and destroyed three medium machine gun positions. His bravery and leadership brought alive the courageous traditions of the Indian Army. His role in hoisting the Indian tricolor again at Point 4875 was unforgettable. For this indomitable bravery and patriotism of Captain Anuj Nayyar, he was awarded the Mahavir Chakra posthumously.
